President Marcos is calling on Filipinos to protect truth from distortion. He also urged Filipinos to restore trust in a time increasingly marked by division and distrust. His appeal came as the country marks the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence. At Rizal Park, Marcos and members of the First Family led the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies honoring Dr. Jose Rizal and other national heroes. This was followed by the Parada ng Kalayaan at the Quirino Grandstand. Colorful floats, cultural performances, and music celebrated the Filipino spirit.

President Marcos acknowledged the leadership of Senator Sherwin Gatchalian during the Philippine Independence Day celebration. The president walked up to Gatchalian and shook his hand following the wreath-laying ceremony in Rizal Park in Manila. In his speech, Marcos called Gatchalian the Senate President Pro Tempore as he greeted the guests. A leadership dispute at the Senate erupted after Gatchalian was elected Senate President Pro Tempore and Acting Senate President. Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has rejected the leadership change, describing it as an illegal coup d’état.

Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson describes his arrest over a cyberlibel case as a “badge of honor.” He noted that the filing of the case came after he intensified his calls for a full investigation into the flood control controversy. Singson questioned why those raising concerns over alleged corruption were being pursued. The former governor maintained that the issue is not the cyberlibel case but finding out where public funds went, who benefited, and who should be held accountable. He says if this is enough to earn a cyberlibel case, then it only proves that these questions are hitting where they hurt most.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro says China’s sanctions against him and his family were the usual punishment for those who expose its deception. China had banned Teodoro and his immediate family from entering the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao. Teodoro was accused of undermining Chinese interests and sabotaging China-Philippine relations. The defense chief says he will just keep doing his duty. Teodoro has been vocal about alleged Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea. He consistently criticizes these actions in every forum, whether local or international.
