Filipino beauty queens and pageant personalities have spoken out on national identity and representation after controversial remarks about so-called “halfies” triggered criticism online.
The controversy began after former male pageant titleholders Brandon Espiritu and Jether Palomo suggested that the Philippines would struggle in international beauty competitions without candidates of mixed heritage.
The comments drew criticism from pageant fans and fellow titleholders, who argued that being Filipino is not defined by bloodline or ethnicity.
Emma Mary Tiglao said representing the Philippines on the international stage was never about ancestry or labels.
She emphasized that being Filipino is defined by love of country, pride, and commitment to representing the nation.
Meanwhile, Michelle Dee highlighted the importance of unity and the Filipino spirit of bayanihan, while Krishna Gravidez underscored the value of heritage and patriotism, describing herself as a proud Ilokano-Bisaya Filipina.
The controversy arose after a social media video showed Espiritu and Palomo not singing in Tagalog during a pageant-related gathering. In subsequent online exchanges, Espiritu reportedly referred to “halfies” and suggested they played a key role in the country’s pageant success.
Screenshots of the comments circulated widely on social media even after the posts were deleted.
Both Espiritu and Palomo later issued public apologies.
Espiritu acknowledged that his remarks were perceived as disrespectful, while Palomo described his comments as inappropriate and said he would reflect on the incident and learn from the criticism.
The episode has since sparked broader discussions online about identity, representation, and what it means to be Filipino on the global stage.
