U.S. President Donald Trump is safe after a shooting incident disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 25, with authorities confirming that the suspect has been taken into custody.
According to officials, an armed man attempted to breach security at the event venue and fired at a Secret Service agent near the main screening area. The agent was hit in a protected area but was not injured.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were immediately escorted out of the venue by security personnel following the incident. Other officials present, including Cabinet members, were also safely evacuated.
About an hour after being rushed out, Trump confirmed on social media that the “shooter had been apprehended,” commending law enforcement for their swift response. He later assured the public that all senior officials, including the Vice President and Cabinet members, were “in perfect condition.”
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said authorities are investigating the shooting, which occurred near the entrance of the event.
Witnesses reported that panic spread inside the venue after gunshots were heard, prompting attendees to take cover as security forces secured the area. The event, attended by around 2,600 guests, was ultimately canceled.
Among those present were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who were evacuated by security teams.
Authorities have yet to release further details about the suspect or the motive behind the incident as the investigation continues.
