Philippines joins 65 nations in call to protect UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

The Philippines has joined more than 65 countries in calling for stronger protection for United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon following a series of deadly attacks on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

In a joint statement delivered during a media stakeout at the UN Headquarters on Thursday, the countries expressed grave concern over the safety of UNIFIL personnel amid escalating tensions in Lebanon.

The signatories strongly condemned the continuing attacks against UNIFIL, including the recent assault that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers and wounded several others from France, Ghana, Indonesia, Nepal, and Poland.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the persistent attacks against UNIFIL,” the group said, adding that they also “firmly condemn the unacceptable aggressive behaviour towards UNIFIL personnel and leadership.”

The countries said tensions in Lebanon have sharply escalated since March 2.

They stressed that peacekeepers must never be targeted, noting that attacks against them are prohibited under international law and could amount to war crimes.

The group also called for swift, transparent, and comprehensive investigations into all attacks against UN peacekeepers, saying those responsible must be held accountable.

Beyond the security situation, the countries voiced concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, citing significant civilian casualties, widespread destruction of infrastructure, and the displacement of more than one million people.

The signatories urged all parties to return to the 2024 cessation of hostilities arrangement and comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which seeks to preserve peace and stability in southern Lebanon.

They likewise called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and a return to negotiations, while reaffirming their commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and unity.

Among the countries that signed the statement were the Philippines, Australia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, among others. The group said more countries are expected to join the statement.
