Philippine officials have formally sought Iran’s designation of the Philippines as a “non-hostile country” and assurances for the safe passage of oil shipments and Filipino seafarers amid tensions in the Middle East.
During a meeting with the Iranian ambassador, Foreign Affairs Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro and Energy Secretary Sharon Garin conveyed Manila’s request to secure energy supply routes and protect Filipino workers.
Iran signaled its willingness to assist, with both sides agreeing to course detailed requests through official diplomatic channels to expedite coordination.
Officials said the discussions were constructive, with optimism for a favorable outcome as talks are expected to continue at higher levels, including a planned conversation between Lazaro and the Iranian foreign minister.
The engagement forms part of the Philippines’ broader efforts to safeguard its energy security and citizens amid ongoing regional instability.
