Marks & Spencer confirms Philippines future with MAP partnership

by Philippine Chronicle

Marks & Spencer will continue operating in the Philippines after signing a new franchise agreement with PT Mitra Adiperkasa Tbk (MAP), the Indonesian retail group that already manages the brand in Indonesia and Vietnam.

Under the partnership, M&S fashion, home, beauty, and food products will return to the Philippine market by the end of the year, with the first store set to open at Glorietta.

M&S has operated in the Philippines since 1984 through its former franchise partner, Rustan’s. However, a series of recent store closures had fuelled speculation among customers that the British retailer was preparing to exit the market.

Mark Lemming, MD of Marks & Spencer International, said the company remains committed to growing its presence in the Philippines and sees MAP as the right partner to support its next phase of expansion.

“Having played a pivotal role in driving our growth in Indonesia, MAP’s deep local expertise gives us confidence as we accelerate our growth plans in Southeast Asia,” said Lemming.

“We know there is strong demand for the M&S brand in the Philippines, and we’re excited to reopen our stores and online channels later this year.”

MAP has operated M&S franchise businesses in Indonesia for more than 26 years.

Sameer Prasad, CEO of MAP Fashion, said taking over the Philippine business marks an important step in the company’s regional growth strategy.

“The Philippines is an exciting and fast-growing market, and Manila is the ideal place to begin this next chapter for M&S,” said Prasad.

“We look forward to strengthening the brand’s presence in the market and delivering an elevated retail experience for Filipino customers.”
