Faster but fair. Senator Panfilo Lacson said there is a need to minimize the delays in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
“Speeding up the trial does not mean compromising the presentation of evidence,” he said in a mix of Filipino and English in a recent interview on DZBB.
“It means maximizing the limited time available to us,” Lacson pointed out.
For his part, Lacson cited he has already suggested to the defense and prosecution to make sure their witnesses for one week are readily available in a holding room.
He also recommended that senator-judges discuss in this week’s caucus the scope of their questioning during the trial since one such exchange lasted at least an hour.
If they finish early with one witness, Lacson explained “we can move to the next and not waste time.”
“The Vice President is entitled to a speedy trial, just like any respondent in an ordinary court trial,” he said.
“So we must devise ways to speed it up,” added the lawmaker.
