“Today, ASEAN stands at an important moment in its space journey. Across our region, space capabilities are steadily expanding,” PhilSA acting director general Gay Jane Perez said.
Perez said the proposed declaration represents a regional commitment to strengthen cooperation, encourage innovation and ensure ASEAN member states can benefit from space technologies.
Trade Undersecretary Allan Gepty said the declaration could become a milestone in ASEAN cooperation.
“Its envisioned adoption by ASEAN Leaders later this year will stand as a powerful testament to ASEAN’s belief that Space Science and Technology are indispensable drivers of regional integration, economic resilience, and sustainable development,” Gepty said.
Discussions at the forum focused on translating the proposed declaration into concrete regional cooperation, using space technologies to address climate change, disaster risks and food security, and strengthening ASEAN’s role in the global space economy.
Participants also discussed international partnerships, capacity building, knowledge exchange, multilateral governance and the responsible and peaceful use of outer space.
The Philippines is targeting the declaration’s adoption in November as part of its ASEAN chairship agenda.
