Iran has again closed the Strait of Hormuz amid its ongoing standoff with the United States, signaling that a final peace deal remains out of reach.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said there had been some progress in talks with Washington but emphasized that “many gaps” remain.
“We are still far from the final discussion,” he said, as negotiations continue following failed talks in Pakistan.
Tehran warned it would not fully reopen the critical maritime chokepoint until the United States lifts its blockade on Iranian ports.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas shipments, had briefly reopened during a temporary ceasefire but was shut again after tensions flared.
US President Donald Trump said “very good conversations” were ongoing but warned Iran against using the strait as leverage.
Iranian forces have also warned that vessels passing without permission could be targeted, raising concerns over shipping safety and global energy supply.
The conflict, which began in late February, continues to disrupt regional stability and global markets, with no clear resolution in sight.
