Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has called on the government to begin preparing for fuel rationing to extend the country’s supply amid disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict.
Gatchalian said the Philippines currently has around 50 days of fuel supply, warning that waiting until stocks run low before implementing rationing could worsen the situation.
He proposed limiting fuel purchases for non-essential use while ensuring sufficient supply for emergency services, public transport, and other critical sectors.
The senator said rationing could help stretch available fuel, noting that reducing daily consumption would be necessary to significantly extend inventory levels.
Gatchalian also pointed to past measures during the 1973 oil crisis, when fuel rationing was implemented to manage shortages.
He said the proposal is part of broader recommendations submitted to the executive branch as the government continues to respond to global energy volatility.
