Filipino chefs serve 400 years of history at Las Vegas dinner event

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A culinary storytelling event celebrating 400 years of Filipino American history is coming to Las Vegas during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

The third annual Isang Kusina will take place on Friday, May 22, at 6 p.m. at the Keep Memory Alive Event Center in downtown Las Vegas. Istorya, a Las Vegas-based pop-up restaurant, will host the event.

The event will feature an eight-course dinner, live storytelling, and performances highlighting the Filipino American diaspora, culture, and community.

Seven chefs from across the nation will prepare dishes tied to specific chapters of history. The dinner will be served in reverse chronological order, beginning with Las Vegas and ending with a historical moment dating back to 1587.

The evening will begin with a State of Nevada Proclamation recognizing Istorya, presented by Nevada Assemblywoman Erica Mosca, and conclude with a performance by Ruby Ibarra, an award-winning Filipino American artist. Other featured performers include vocalist Robin Nievera, pianist and vocal artist Faustino, and DJ Coco Jenkins.

Participating chefs include Dio Buan and Justin Barnes of Istorya, Patrice Cleary of Purple Patch in Washington, D.C., Aaron Verzosa of Archipelago in Seattle, Rachel Carrillo Barril of In Bocca al Lupo in Juneau, Christina Quackenbush of Tatlo in New Orleans, and Lord Maynard Llera of Kuya Lord in Los Angeles.

Other featured activities for participants include karaoke, mahjong, a timeline walk installation, and a palengke, a traditional Filipino public market.
