At least seven Filipino seafarers were injured after the Malta-flagged container vessel MV San Antonio was hit in an alleged drone attack in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Department of Migrant Workers.
Speaking during a press briefing at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the incident happened on May 5 and involved what was described as an Iranian drone strike.
“Based on our records, it is a Malta-flagged ship, and ang situation is na-attack siya around May 5,” Cacdac said.
“As per report, it was a drone attack. It was an Iranian drone attack that hit the ship,” he added.
Cacdac said seven Filipinos were among the injured crew members onboard the vessel.
“All seafarers are okay. They are alive. They survived the attack. However, they suffered injuries one way or another,” he said.
According to the DMW chief, four of the Filipino crew members sustained minor injuries, while three others are currently confined in the intensive care unit for closer monitoring.
Authorities said the injuries involved burns and gas inhalation following the explosion caused by the strike.
Cacdac clarified, however, that none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
The Filipino seafarers have since been removed from the vessel and transferred to an undisclosed hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Philippine embassy officials and labor attachés are also monitoring their condition and coordinating with hospital authorities.
The DMW chief added that government representatives are expected to visit the injured seafarers and provide assistance in coordination with the host government.
Meanwhile, Cacdac reported that more than 1,400 Filipino seafarers have already safely exited the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.
He also said the government has relaxed restrictions on crew replacements following the implementation of a ceasefire, allowing replacement personnel for seafarers whose contracts have ended or who are experiencing fatigue or post-traumatic stress.
