The Philippine government said it will continue engaging with Myanmar following the election of junta chief Min Aung Hlaing as the country’s new president.
In a statement issued Friday, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro will continue consultations with Myanmar in her role as Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar.
“The Philippines remains committed to support ASEAN’s collective efforts and encourages renewed momentum toward the full and effective implementation of the Five-Point Consensus, particularly in achieving the cessation of violence and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar,” the statement said.
Min Aung Hlaing was elected president on Friday following a parliamentary vote in Myanmar.
He secured 429 votes, defeating retired general Nyo Saw, who received 126 votes.
