14 Filipino seafarers safe after Nigeria vessel collision

by Philippine Chronicle

All 14 Filipino crew members aboard the Singapore-flagged container vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso are safe following its collision with oil tanker Lady Martina in Nigeria’s Onne Bonny River on May 20, according to the Department of Migrant Workers.

In a Facebook post, the DMW said the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has activated emergency response procedures in coordination with maritime pilots and other concerned authorities following the incident.

The agency said it continues to closely monitor the condition of the Filipino seafarers and developments involving the vessel.

The maritime collision marked the second incident involving ships carrying Filipino crew members within two days, prompting the DMW to issue a stern reminder to maritime stakeholders to prioritize the safety and security of vessels employing Filipino seafarers.

The DMW also assured that it is conducting real-time monitoring of routes worldwide to ensure the welfare and protection of overseas Filipino seafarers.
