HOUSTON – The Houston Filipino Street Festival returns to Constellation Field in Sugar Land on Oct. 17 with Filipino food, live entertainment, family-friendly activities — and this year, the festivities will end with fireworks.
Now in its ninth year, the festival celebrates Filipino American History Month and brings together local businesses, artists and community organizations. Visitors can enjoy favorite foods such as lumpia, pancit and barbecue, explore the marketplace or participate in activities including kids’ karaoke, crafts, mahjong and eating contests.
Singer AJ Rafael headlines this year’s entertainment. His debut album “Red Roses” reached the iTunes and Billboard charts. Limited VIP meet-and-greet tickets are also available and include festival admission, a photo opportunity and an intimate discussion with the singer.
Plus, the Filipino Young Professionals of Houston Cultural Ambassadors are introducing a traditional kulintang ensemble featuring five percussion instruments, including gong-chimes. The musical tradition is associated with Indigenous communities in the southern Philippines. See a preview of the performance in the video above.
The festival began with a small community event honoring Filipino medical workers who helped with outreach following Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Since then, it has grown into one of Texas’ largest celebrations of Filipino American History Month.
