Marcus Smith has revealed he could one day swap the Red Rose for another nation — while also admitting he dreams of a future move to Major League Rugby in America.

The England playmaker opened up about his long-term future during a recent Q&A, explaining that although his focus remains fully on England and Harlequins for now, he would love the chance to both represent the Philippines and experience rugby in the United States later in his career.
“But one day that might be different… if the chance comes and my body holds up, it would be amazing to play alongside my younger brothers.”
“One day I’d love to help and be involved in Philippine rugby — my brother currently plays for the Philippines,” Smith said.
“Right now, my heart and mind are fully with England. It’s a dream to wear this kit.

From Manila to England Star
Born in Manila to a Filipino mother and British father, Smith moved to the UK at the age of eight before beginning his rise through the rugby ranks.
Since breaking through at Harlequins, Smith has established himself as one of the most exciting backs in world rugby.
He famously helped Harlequins win the Premiership title in 2021 and later earned selection for the British & Irish Lions.
Under Steve Borthwick, Smith has remained a central figure for England thanks to his attacking flair, footwork and game management.

Current World Rugby eligibility rules allow players to switch international allegiance after a three-year stand-down period.
That means Smith could potentially represent the Philippines once his England career comes to an end.

Speaking on the Major League Rugby TikTok account, Smith admitted he would love the opportunity to experience rugby in the United States.
“Fingers crossed, one year I can play in the MLR. Los Angeles or Miami.
“I’m super excited about rugby growing in America for a couple of reasons.
“I’ve got a lot of family based in America, some in Los Angeles, some in Minnesota. I used to travel there a fair bit when I was younger. I enjoy the way the Americans do sport.”
Smith specifically mentioned RFC Los Angeles and Miami Sharks as potential destinations.
For now, England remains his clear priority — but his latest comments suggest there could still be some fascinating twists to come in both his club and international future.
