The Philippine government is stepping up legal support for three Filipino seafarers who remain detained in Algeria following a 2023 drug-related case.
Department of Migrant Workers said it is working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs to strengthen the defense of the three crew members.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the agency remains in constant communication with the families and continues to provide assistance as the case progresses.
The three were among eight Filipino crew members arrested in July 2023 after authorities discovered 35.8 kilograms of cocaine aboard a commercial vessel docked in Algiers. Five have since been released, while three remain in detention.
Government officials have conducted jail visits to monitor their condition and ensure their welfare.
Cacdac said authorities are reviewing possible legal strategies, including any plea that may affect the outcome of their appeal.
The government is expected to make recommendations based on the assessment as it continues efforts to secure the welfare and eventual resolution of the case for the detained seafarers.
