NBI: Probe on threats vs first family covers all, not just Baste Duterte

by Philippine Chronicle

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has clarified that its ongoing investigation into alleged threats against the First Family is not limited to Sebastian Duterte, but covers all individuals making similar statements.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag said the administrative order he signed a few days ago was intended to apply broadly to anyone issuing remarks perceived as threats against the President, the First Family, or the government.

“It’s directed to everybody who issues a statement that somehow threatens or gives some threat to the First Family, to the government. So that’s everybody,” Matibag said in a mix of English and Filipino during a press briefing.

He added that while Mayor Duterte’s recent remarks drew public attention—after he was quoted saying he “needed only President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s head”—the investigation is not specifically focused on him.

Matibag explained that Duterte’s statement coincided with the issuance of the order, which may have led to assumptions that he is the sole subject of the probe. However, he stressed that any individual whose statements fall under the scope of the directive will be included in the investigation.

The NBI also said it will examine similar pronouncements made on social media by various personalities allegedly issuing threats against the President and other government officials.

Earlier, Malacañang Press Officer Claire Castro said the bureau has the mandate to investigate reported threats, including alleged plans to remove or harm the President.

The development comes amid broader allegations raised in a House of Representatives justice committee hearing, where witness Ramil Madriaga claimed that former President Rodrigo Duterte and retired military officials had discussed efforts to oust Marcos, including an alleged assassination plot.
