Animal groups condemn dove use in Easter rite

by Philippine Chronicle

Animal welfare groups have condemned the use of a live dove during a Salubong ceremony in Malabon, saying the animal was subjected to distress and harm.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society said it was “deeply concerned and shocked,” noting that the dove was reportedly restrained and used as part of a religious presentation before later dying after being released with balloons.

The Animal Kingdom Foundation also raised concerns, saying the bird appeared forced and unable to fly, contradicting the symbolism of peace and resurrection associated with the ritual.

Both groups urged organizers to adopt more humane practices, stressing that compassion should extend to animals in religious traditions.

As of posting, church authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
