US expands ‘public’ social media requirement for more visa applicants

The US Embassy in the Philippines has expanded its requirement for visa applicants to set their social media accounts to “public” as part of the application process.

The new rule, effective March 30, covers additional visa categories, including fiancé visas, domestic workers, trainees, religious visitors, and certain special visa applicants.

Officials said applicants must also disclose all social media accounts used in the past five years, as part of the US government’s vetting procedures.

The embassy warned that failure to provide complete and accurate information may result in visa denial and possible ineligibility for future applications.

The measure builds on existing requirements introduced in 2019, as authorities continue to tighten screening for visa applicants.
