Science chiefs collect to make ASEAN an innovation powerhouse

by Philippine Chronicle

Science and technology ministers from across Southeast Asia have convened in Jakarta, Indonesia, with a shared goal: to transform ASEAN into a global force for innovation.

Despite being home to the world’s fifth-largest economy, the region still faces significant hurdles in harnessing its full potential for scientific and technological advancement. Key challenges include limited investment in research and development, as well as a lack of strong partnerships between governments and the private sector.

At the opening of the 21st Ministerial Assembly on Science, Technology and Innovation, ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn highlighted the pressing need for increased funding. Currently, the region invests less than one percent of its gross domestic product in research and development—well below the two percent average seen in more developed economies.

Kao also pointed out that only a small fraction of science and innovation projects in Southeast Asia involve private sector collaboration, making up just nine percent of all partnerships. He called on science leaders to build stronger public-private ties, embrace emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, and invest in upskilling the workforce to keep pace with global trends.

The summit marked the launch of the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation 2026-2035, a comprehensive strategy designed to guide the region’s innovation efforts over the next decade.

Representing the Philippines, Science Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. attended the summit and received recognition for the country’s achievements in health innovation and disaster resilience. As the gathering continues, ASEAN’s science chiefs remain focused on turning challenges into opportunities, aiming to position the region as a powerhouse of innovation on the world stage.
