MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has opened its market to fresh Hass avocados from Peru following the signing of a bilateral work plan between the government’s crop development agency and the South American country’s agrarian health service.

In a statement, the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) said the signing of the work plan for the exportation of fresh Hass avocado with Peru’s National Agrarian Health Service outlines the terms for the fruit’s entry into the local market.

“The work plan establishes the phytosanitary requirements and operational guidelines that will govern the safe entry of Peruvian Hass avocados into the Philippine market – ensuring that imported produce meets the highest standards of plant health and food safety,” the BPI said in a statement.

The government agency said the agreement marks the culmination of months of technical discussions and evaluations between the two sides and represents a step forward in building agricultural cooperation and safe trade practices.

It said that this also reaffirms the Philippines’ commitment to international standards under the World Trade Organization and the International Plant Protection Convention.

The BPI said the entry of Peruvian avocados will help diversify the country’s agricultural imports and provide Filipino consumers with more choices in the local market.

The agency added that such partnerships highlight the government’s effort to attract new investments and promote safe and sustainable agricultural trade.

Officials said the cooperation between the Philippines and Peru is expected to lead to closer coordination on plant protection, food safety and knowledge sharing in the agri-food sector.

By opening its doors to Peruvian avocados, the BPI said the country continues to position itself as an active participant in global agricultural trade while ensuring that imported products meet the country’s high standards for safety and quality.

According to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Hass variety is popular among importers because of its rich flavor and creamy texture.

The fruit’s smaller size and distinct pebbly skin which darkens to a purplish black color when ripe also make it appealing to markets where such characteristics are highly preferred.
