The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA pulled away in the second half to defeat the San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 78-61, to open its title defense bid in the NCAA Season 101 juniors basketball tournament Friday at the Filoil Centre in San Juan.

The Junior ALTAs were leading 40-35 before the Staglets inched closer, 42-41, early in the third period. However, the Las Piñas crew made a 7-0 run to pull away, 49-41. Perpetual then continued to pound on San Sebastian to eventually claim the win.

Jim Corpuz had 17 points to lead Perpetual, while Don Rosales and Renzo Zanoria had 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Browyn Tepan had 16 points for San Sebastian, while Khaizer Castillo and Joshua Scott had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Gilas Pilipinas Youth’s Mark Esperanza, meanwhile, missed the game as he is serving a three-game suspension after playing in another league just before the season started.
