The Gomez de Liaño surname has long been familiar in amateur sports, with brothers Joe, Javi, Juan, and Jordi all having played for the University of the Philippines, either in high school or college.

Now, the youngest in the family, Jaime, is charting his own path in collegiate basketball as he brings his talents from Diliman to San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the NCAA.

“I was thinking about what colleges I should go to, and I felt San Sebastian was the best place for me to grow as a player,” Jaime told GMA News Online.

The 18-year-old Jaime, the sixth in the family and born after their only sister Mara, said his family is fully supportive of his decision, recognizing that each of them has their own journey.

“Yeah, just full support because each of us have different paths and iba-ibang journeys. So right now, they just support me anywhere I go,” he said.

Jaime also acknowledges that he has to earn his minutes with the Golden Stags, especially as he continues adjusting to both the culture in Manila and within the San Sebastian program.

“I think what I can give to San Sebastian now is my energy and my hard work because the seniors deserve their minutes as well. So I have to work for my spot in the lineup and just give all my positive energy,” he said.

San Sebastian will open its NCAA Season 101 campaign on Friday at noon against the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA.
