MANILA, Philippines – Former Mayor Alice Guo of Bamban, Tarlac has been apprehended in the Greater Jakarta metropolitan region of Indonesia, as reported by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Wednesday, September 4. NBI Director Jimmy Santiago confirmed to Rappler that Guo is currently in the custody of Indonesian authorities. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Guo was arrested at 11:58 PM in Tangerang City, which is part of the Greater Jakarta area, also referred to as Jabodetabek, on September 3, Tuesday.

The arrest stemmed from a request for cooperation made by Philippine authorities after Guo was placed on the Bureau of Immigration’s lookout list due to her involvement in various corruption cases during her tenure as mayor. Guo, who served from 2016 to 2019, has been under investigation for alleged misappropriation of public funds and other malfeasance.

The DOJ stated that they will work closely with Indonesian law enforcement to facilitate her extradition back to the Philippines, where she faces multiple charges. The agency emphasized the importance of accountability for public officials and expressed its commitment to pursuing legal action against those who misuse their positions.

Guo’s legal troubles gained widespread attention after various whistleblowers came forward, alleging discrepancies in the allocation of municipal funds and questionable transactions during her administration. Activists and local citizens had been calling for her arrest for months, claiming that her actions had significantly harmed the community’s development projects.

As the news of her arrest circulated, reactions from local officials and residents of Bamban were mixed. Some expressed relief and hope for justice, while others were skeptical about whether this would lead to meaningful accountability in local governance.

The NBI continues to monitor the situation closely and is preparing to send a team to Indonesia to assist in the extradition process. Meanwhile, Guo remains in custody as authorities gather evidence and finalize the necessary legal documentation for her return to the Philippines.
