Highlights
A towering masterpiece by James Doran Webb welcomed visitors as they approached the venue. “The Bearer of Infinite Blessings” — a six-meter-tall dragon emitting a mesmerizing smoke effect — was crafted from driftwood and recycled stainless steel, with 80 percent of its materials sourced from waste. The eco-conscious sculpture set the tone for the visual spectacles that awaited inside.
National Artist Kidlat Tahimik made his mark with a film screening, artist talk and book signing, offering an inspiring exploration of indigenous creativity. He emphasized the importance of celebrating local roots in reclaiming identity after colonization.
“We have to come to terms with ourselves and our local culture, local assets and local richness so that we can be contributing partners of globalization,” he said.
The event was further elevated by two iconic works of art that transported viewers through time: Juan Luna’s “Ut Diligatis Invicem” and Felix Resurrecion Hidalgo’s “The Galician Coast.” Part of Museo Cariñeo’s esteemed collection, these masterpieces offered a glimpse into the rich legacy of Filipino art.
The BODEGA Design Caravan was another standout, featuring 28 exhibitors whose creations spanned fashion, furniture and beyond. Among the participants was Balik Batik, a social enterprise dedicated to preserving traditional Filipino weaving, embroidery and craftsmanship.
Adding to the sustainable theme, designer Manuel Jamio showcased a collection of traditional barongs, each inspired by native trees such as Ylang-Ylang, Banaba and Dapdap.
Malaysia’s Artemis Art Gallery brought a global edge to the event with works by Southeast Asian talents. Known for championing emerging artists, the gallery further cemented its reputation from international fairs in Hong Kong and Jakarta.
Student creatives from schools such as the University of San Carlos, Cebu Institute of Technology and Southwestern University Phinma energized the fair with fresh ideas and youthful perspectives, ensuring a dynamic exchange of minds and culture.
The Visayas Art Fair 2024 was a celebration of artistry, innovation and community, leaving visitors with countless moments of inspiration and conversations to carry forward.
