Anita Magsaysay Ho’s granddaughter-in-law follows in her footsteps

by Philippine Chronicle

Wonhee Cha, wife of Rashid Delgado, whose parents are Helen Magsaysay Ho Delgado and Robbie Delgado, have been friends of mine for almost four decades.

Whee, as her friends call her, finished her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Sculpture at Rhode Island School of Design in the US in 2007. Furthermore, she continued her Masters of Fine Arts, Sculpture at Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea, where she is originally from.

Just this May 4, she held a one-woman exhibit at the Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo, which was founded by visionary Dr. Joven Cuanang. The gallery itself is a work of art. I really had to work my way down from Gallery I to II, III, IV, V, VI to arrive at Gallery VII where Whee’s exhibit, titled “Silent Scream,” was on view.

Whee’s first solo exhibit in the Philippines, “Supreme Garden,” showcased her “Fantasy Collage Series” and “Fantasy Nature Series” at Leon Gallery on Nov. 16 to 20, 2023.

The artist draws inspiration from print media. particularly magazines, and her surroundings in both Seoul and Manila, including the tranquil nature in the Philippines.

Aside from Seoul and the Philippines, Whee has also exhibited in Singapore.

Wonhee has spent much of her life abroad, yearning to free herself from the constraints of an identity shaped by the gaze of others. Living overseas allowed her to escape the fixed ideas of “who I should be” and “what I should become.” She said it took her a long time to break from her own distorted attitude that suppressed her inner self. Whee believes her work should not merely speak but evoke, stirring emotions and sensations beyond words. She continues “to seek to immerse myself in infinity through paintings that are alive with rough textures and vibrant powerful colors.”

Her loving mother-in-law, Helen, arranged everything, including a soulful violin performance by virtuoso Coke Bolipata while the reception was ongoing with natural wines curated by Supernatural and a hearty food fare. Wonhee’s mother even came from Korea to be at her daughter’s art opening. Altogether a most enjoyable afternoon that made you forget all about the heat!
