MANILA, Philippines – Ayala-led ACEN Corporation plans to invest approximately P34.5 billion in the development of its large-scale onshore wind power project in Tayabas, Quezon Province.
ACEN subsidiary Gigawind4 Inc. recently filed documents with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines, stating that the Banahaw Wind Project will have a total power generation capacity of up to 247 megawatts (MW).
The wind farm covers 4,536 hectares and consists of 38 wind turbines, each with a standard rated capacity of 6.5 MW.
Gigawind4 stated: “While solar plays a central role in the renewable energy mix, the synergies between solar and wind are significant.”
“Integrating the planned 247 MW wind farm into the broader energy landscape will create a strong and balanced renewable energy portfolio and meet the Philippines’ growing demand for clean and sustainable energy,” it said.
According to the company’s initial plans, the pre-development phase of the wind power project will take approximately three years.
Preparatory work includes site identification and planning, obtaining national permits and licenses, and conducting wind resource measurements and assessments.
According to Gigawind4, the first phase of the development and construction phase will include preparing access roads, platforms, and foundations.
The company added: “Construction could take approximately two years, up to five years, before the project becomes fully operational.”
The ACEN department intends to hire several consultants to advance the project from the development phase to the construction and operations phase.
Gigawind4 stated: “The Banahaw Wind Power Project is not only a significant initiative in promoting renewable energy, but also has great potential to meet regional needs and bring about positive socioeconomic change.”
For this proposed project, the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources invites all interested and concerned parties to attend a public exploration event held today at Casa Comunidad de Tayabas in Quezon.
The public bidding is an early stage in the environmental impact assessment process, during which applicants are required to provide a project profile and other relevant information outlining the scope of work and terms of reference.
ACEN, the publicly listed energy platform of the Ayala Group, currently has a wind power portfolio of nearly 1,000 MW in the Philippines, including projects in operation and under construction.
