Mapua University handed defending champion University of Perpetual Help System DALTA its first loss in the NCAA Season 101 juniors basketball tournament, 65-57, on Wednesday at the Filoil Centre in San Juan.

The Junior ALTAs started strong, taking a 27-20 lead after the first period. However, the Las Piñas squad was limited to just 20 points combined over the next two quarters — eight in the second and 12 in the third — allowing the Red Robins to seize a 53-47 lead entering the final frame.

Perpetual mounted a rally to tie the game at 55 with 6:35 left in the fourth quarter, but Mapua responded with an 8-0 run to pull away with under three minutes remaining.

Jim Corpuz trimmed the deficit to 57–63, but the Red Robins held off the Junior ALTAs to claim their second win of the season.

Kean Dungca led Mapua with 13 points, four rebounds, a steal, and a block, while Froilan Reyes added 11 points. Chris Parame grabbed 12 rebounds to go with his seven points as Mapua improved to 2-1 in Group A.

Hanz Llupar tallied 20 points, while Ezekiel Zamoras chipped in 15 in a losing effort as the Junior ALTAs dropped to a similar 2-1 record.
