Alex Pereira made quick work of Magomed Ankalaev to reclaim the UFC light heavyweight world championship in the main event of UFC 320, Sunday (Philippine time) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, USA.
Eager to fulfill his promise to perform better compared to their previous encounter last March, where he lost the title on points, Pereira went straight to work right in the opening bell as he rushed Ankalaev with a right hand in the opening stanza.
Ankalaev tried to maintain his distance, but was on the receiving end of Pereira’s early aggression. A right hand on top from Pereira made Ankalaev shoot for a takedown, only for the Brazilian to secure mount position to rain down punches and elbows at him.
Defenseless and without an answer to Pereira’s assault, the referee stepped in to halt the contest at the 1:20 mark of round one. The Brazilian fan-favorite improved his mixed martial arts record to 13-3 while Ankalaev dropped to 21-2-1.
In the co-main event, UFC bantamweight world champion Merab Dvalishvili made yet another successful defense of his world title, extending his winning streak to 14 to improve his professional MMA record to 21-4.
