Syringe Attacks Cast Shadow Over France’s Celebrated Music Festival
France’s famous street music festival, usually a night of joy and dancing, turned unsettling this year after dozens of people reported being pricked with syringes in crowded areas. Police say they have arrested twelve suspects following a wave of attacks that left 145 festival-goers across the country seeking help.
The Fete de la Musique draws huge crowds every June, with Paris especially packed this year. But as the music played, reports began to surface of people feeling sudden stings and then unwell. Some victims, including teenagers, were taken to hospitals for tests. Authorities are still investigating whether any dangerous substances were injected.
Social media posts before the event had alarmingly encouraged attacks on women, raising concerns about safety at public gatherings. Police in Paris alone recorded thirteen cases, and three people there, including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, needed medical attention after feeling sick.
Beyond the syringe incidents, the festival saw over 370 arrests for various offenses, and several people were seriously injured in unrelated events. Even some police officers were hurt during the busy night.
While the music festival remains a beloved tradition, this year’s violence has left many shaken and prompted calls for better security at future public celebrations.
