Rice, corn stocks improve in October

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s rice and corn inventories both rose in October, supported by increased stocks in households and government depositories.

In a report, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said total rice stocks reached 2.35 million metric tons as of Oct. 1, up by 3.2 percent from 2.28 million MT in the same month last year.

“Of this month’s total rice stocks, 40.5 percent were from the commercial sector, 40.4 percent were from the households, and 19 percent were from the NFA depositories,” the government’s data agency said.

The PSA said rice stocks rose annually in households by six percent and in National Food Authority (NFA) depositories by 159.4 percent, while commercial stocks fell by 21.1 percent.

On a month-on-month basis, rice inventories grew by 13.6 percent from 2.07 million MT in September.

Compared to September, household rice stocks rose by 17.8 percent, commercial inventories grew by 17.1 percent and NFA depository levels slipped by 0.2 percent.

Meanwhile, total corn inventories hit 846,810 metric tons as of Oct. 1, up by 16.3 percent from 727,840 MT in the same period last year.

Month-on-month, corn stocks jumped by 52.5 percent from 555,400 MT in September.

The PSA reported that corn inventories grew annually in households by 30.3 percent and in the commercial sector by 13 percent.

About 78.1 percent of total corn stocks came from the commercial sector, with the remaining 21.9 percent held by households.

The country’s grain production in the first half of the year has increased, with rice output reaching 9.08 MMT, up by 6.4 percent from the same period last year.

Corn output for the same period also totaled 3.9 MMT, a 5.2 percent increase from the previous year.
