Filipinos Favor Social Media Over News Outlets for Local News

Filipinos are some of the most eager consumers of local news in the Asia Pacific region, but their habits are changing. Instead of turning to newspapers, radio, or TV, more people now rely on social media platforms for updates about their communities. Recent research shows that nearly four in ten Filipinos are highly interested in local news, putting the country among the top in Southeast Asia.

The study found that when including those who are at least somewhat interested, the number of Filipinos seeking local news rises even higher. People in the Philippines are especially likely to look for stories about local crime, accidents, politics, and practical information like weather or transportation updates.

Despite this strong interest, most Filipinos now get their news from social media rather than traditional outlets. Platforms like Facebook and YouTube have become the main sources for everything from political updates to community events. These platforms are popular because they offer quick and easy access to information.

Traditional media still has an edge in sports news, where slightly more Filipinos prefer established news outlets over social media. For most other topics, however, digital platforms are the preferred choice.

This shift has made it difficult for local newspapers and broadcasters to keep their audiences. In recent years, several long-standing community papers have closed due to higher costs and fewer readers. This reflects a trend seen in the media industry around the world.

Another finding is that more Filipinos are avoiding the news altogether, with nearly half admitting to tuning out at times. This places the Philippines among the top countries globally for news avoidance.

As digital habits continue to change, the way people in the Philippines access and engage with news is evolving. While interest in local information remains high, traditional outlets are working to adapt and find new ways to stay relevant.
