MANILA, Philippines — Universal Pictures released the first trailer of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of “The Odyssey” starring Matt Damon.

The film is an epic retelling of Homer’s famous tale of the same name about Greek hero Odysseus and his decade-long voyage home after the Trojan War.

Damon portrays the titular character, while Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland portray his wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus, respectively.

The trailer begins with makeshift memorials of warriors on the beaches of Troy as Odysseus narrates, “After years of war, no one could stand between my men and home. Not even me.”

Glimpses of Odysseus leading his men into a forest are shown followed by Penelope and Telemachus exchanging glances in Ithaca, where Penelope is warding off suitors in her husband’s absence.

One scene even shows Odysseus and his men inside the Trojan Horse, Odysseus’ cunning plan that ultimately led to the Greeks winning the war.

As the score thunders louder, more scenes from Homer’s story are teased like the cyclops Polyphemus and the stormy waters by Charybdis.

“Promise me you’ll come back,” Penelope says in a flashback, to which Odysseus responds, “What if I can’t?”

A mid-July 2026 release date is confirmed after the title card, plus a note that says the movie was entirely shot with IMAX film cameras.

Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, and Mia Goth are also part of the cast of “The Odyssey.” — Video from Universal Pictures’ YouTube channel
