In 2023, Harvard University published an article about the benefits of eating small fish, like sardines. In the Philippines, sardines are a popular and familiar food.
Sardines are very healthy. They’re rich in protein and Omega-3 fats, with very few carbohydrates — a good combination for people with metabolic health issues. They’re also packed with nutrients like vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, iron, iodine, and more.
Because sardines are small and low on the food chain, they usually don’t have much mercury — unlike bigger fish like tuna.
Interestingly, Harvard Health released a report about the benefits of eating small marine animals, like sardines.
The US-based Medical Wellness Association (MWA) — a group of over 6,000 health and wellness professionals — took a closer look at sardines. They wanted to know: are all sardine brands the same? Does it matter how they’re processed?
One brand stood out: Mega Sardines, from the Philippines.
What makes Mega different is how it catches and processes its sardines. Unlike other companies that rent boats, Mega owns its own fleet. This gives them full control over how the fish are handled. Their process is fast — from ocean to can in under 12 hours. This keeps the fish fresh and full of nutrients.
Because of this, the MWA gave Mega Sardines a special title: “Superfood”, making it the first seafood product brand to receive such recognition in the MWA’s 30-year history.
Dr. Christopher Breuleux, the MWA’s president, said, “Mega Sardines can help people all over the world fight metabolic and heart diseases. It’s a healthy, natural food, processed with great care to stay fresh. Everyone should eat more of it.”
Mega Sardines was founded by William Tiu Lim more than 50 years ago. His goal was to create affordable, healthy food for Filipino families. Today, Mega Sardines isn’t just a fishing company — it’s a global wellness brand.
Tiu Lim said, “Our mission now is to help improve people’s health around the world. That’s a legacy worth fighting for.”
So next time you’re thinking about a healthy meal, maybe just say: “Honey, please pass the sardines.”
