Hodge vows to be better role model

MANILA, Philippines — Meralco forward Cliff Hodge said he has emerged from the episode that led to the first suspension of his PBA career more conscious of his actions and standing as a role model to the youth.

“Of course, you never want to get suspended for any extracurricular activities, but I served my suspension and it kind of let me reflect on being a better role model to everyone,” Hodge said after returning to action in the Bolts’ 108-92 victory over NLEX.

“I know I have to control my emotions,” said the Fil-Am veteran, a known bruiser and hard-nosed defender.

Hodge was penalized for fouling Magnolia’s Zav Lucero hard, wrestling-style last May 14. He was made to pay a P100,000 fine and sat it out a week later when the Bolts beat Blackwater, 103-85.

He was back in active duty versus NLEX last Sunday and contributed 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block in nearly 39 minutes to help the Bolts go back-to-back and cling on to No. 8 at 5-5.

“Feels good (to be back). The team did it without me last game (against the Bossing) and I wanted to come in and just play as hard as I could to try and make up for not being there,” said Hodge.

“You know you never want to miss a game and especially if it’s your own fault. So (I) learned a lot and hopefully it never happens again in my career…It’s my first time to be suspended my whole career, which is kind of crazy. Twelve years in the league, but I mean, I hope it never happens again.”
