Freighanne Garcia delivered anew as Mapua University escaped a tight third set en route to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 win against San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the NCAA Season 100 women’s volleyball tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
The sophomore standout put together the finishing blow to tally 21 points anchored on 17 attacks, two blocks, and two aces while Raissa Ricablanca posted 14 markers as they inched closer to a Final Four spot with an 11-5 card.
With the loss, the Lady Stags formally bowed out as they slipped to a 7-9 record.
“Thankful po kami na nagtulong-tulong po ‘yung bawat isa para mapanalo ‘yung game ngayon kasi natalo po nila kami nu’ng first round so nando’n po ‘yung eagerness namin na bumawi,” Garcia told GMA News Online.
“Hindi nawawala kasi sa amin na ‘pag nakukuha namin ‘yung first two sets nagre-relax kami pero buti nakuha pa rin namin.”
Unlike the first two sets that the Lady Cardinals won convincingly, Mapua had to fend off a gritty stand by the Lady Stags in the third frame after Kath Santos provided the late spark.
The fourth-year outside spiker subbed in late in the third frame then immediately made an impact, unleashing a power kill from the left wing before hitting another hammer from the back row to force a 20-all deadlock.
But Mapua proved to be steadier in the endgame with Garcia scoring back-to-back attacks and Tere Manalo serving an ace to deliver the match point at 24-20.
Garcia finished it off with another hit on the outside as Mapua got its payback against the Lady Stags, the same team that defeated them in their very first game this season.
