Alex Eala loses to Czech opponent in first round of Canadian Open

The Filipino tennis ace Alex Eala lost to Czech player Marketa Vondrousova 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in first round of Canadian Open in Montreal early Monday morning (Philippine time).

After Eala won the first round match, world No. 65 Vondrousova put in a brilliant performance to complete the comeback in a match that lasted two hours and six minutes.

Vondrousova also beat Ella 7-0 in aces and also led in serve points (62% vs. 54%) and return points (46% vs. 38%).

“I just expected her to play a good match and she had some good results. I expected it to be a tough match and it turned out to be a tough match, so I’m happy to advance,” Ella said in the post-match interview.

With this victory, 2023 Wimbledon champion Vondrousova will face Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk in the second round.

The 20-year-old Ella is expected to participate in the Cincinnati Open in the United States on August 7.
