MANILA, Philippines — One person has been reported dead as Typhoon Tino (international name: Kalmaegi) continues to batter Visayas on Tuesday, November 4, according to the latest report from the national disaster council.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the fatality was recorded in Region 7 (Central Visayas), though the case is still being verified. No injuries or missing persons had been confirmed as of 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Tino made landfall over Silago, Southern Leyte at midnight, hours after reaching typhoon strength over the Philippine Sea. The storm entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on November 2 at 5:30 a.m., rapidly intensified, and brought destructive winds and heavy rain over Dinagat Islands, Siargao, Bucas Grande, and Eastern Visayas.
The NDRRMC said at least 17,124 families, or 59,918 people, have been affected so far across five regions. Of these, 9,170 families (32,286 people) took shelter in 362 evacuation centers, while 3,300 families (10,641 people) stayed with relatives or friends. More than 26,000 families, or 75,998 people, were preemptively evacuated before the storm’s landfall.
Sea travel halted, thousands stranded
A total of 108 seaports have suspended operations, leaving 1,403 passengers, 554 rolling cargoes and 46 vessels stranded, mostly in Central and Eastern Visayas. Power interruptions were reported in Placer and Pilar, Surigao del Norte, though electricity in Placer was restored Monday evening.
Only one road section — along the Wright-Taft-Borongan route in Eastern Samar — was briefly closed but reopened to all vehicles the same day.
Classes have been suspended in 459 cities and municipalities, mostly in Regions 7 and 8, while work was called off in 311 areas.
